Glow Dating App

A dating app for introverted individuals and genuine connections.

Overview

This personal project was conceived as an exercise on mobile style. While there is much to dive into on this concept, this case study is focused on the visual design of a dating app.

The concept came from observation of friends and family struggling with existing dating apps. Current options leave it up to you to market yourself on your profile and in messages. This proves stressful for some users and usually results in giving up early on.

Branding

This app's goal is to take the pressure off the user to allow them to focus on other users' personal qualities. The overall brand personality aims to evoke a calm, supported feeling to the user.

Name

The name "Glow" was inspired by the concept of a "slow burn" romance, a relationship that allows for a gradual, organic development of feelings. This app is geared towards genuine connections. It is a place to let your light shine, and discover others' light as well.

Logo

A firefly is used to represents your inner glow, as well as serve as a guiding light through the dark of searching for companionship.

The logo uses a single line to depict two entities connected through a heart. This represents Glow serving as a single tread to tie two individuals together.

Colors

Blue - Calm and trust. Reassuring the user in what may be a stressful process. This is the primary feeling desired in users. Blue is also is not common amongst popular dating apps and sets Glow apart.

Peach - A mixture of pink and orange. This represents the warmth and comfort of romance.

Yellow - Encourages happiness and positivity of the user.

Takeaways

This concept turned out to have a wide variety of layouts to experiment with. The card swiping was a new one, as well as messaging and location browsing in the vein of Uber Eats and DoorDash. This kept each page a fresh challenge to explore and draw inspiration from different apps.

Working mostly in desktop and VR, the interaction design for mobile was a fun change of pace. The card swiping and profile information specifically was a great case to prototype for mobile ergonomics and experiment with layout that brought attention to profile information. Despite limiting to visual design, I became fully invested in the use case of this app and gathered a backlog of feature ideas that I would enjoy testing if I was to expand this.
